Where I am watching has bad video quality – and although the audio isn’t skipping – the video is dropping frames – and retiming/remapping. So yeah – here is session 1
Bill Hybels – The High Drama of Decision Making
Senior Pastor – Willow Creek Community Church
We believe leaderships highest uses is to advance the purposes of God in this world.
Everyone who leads makes decisions every day – so much of leadership is making decisions. In the church world many of those have very high stakes.
This is part of what leaders do – they make tough, tough calls and it’s not for the faint of heart. – when commenting on how he had to let people go after the tech boom.
Stretch your thinking about making decisions – the best book he’s read is judgment.
The first question the christian leader asks is what does the Bible say about this?
So many decisions aren’t so hard because the Bible speaks so clearly.
The second question a leader would ask – what would smart advisers advise me to do? – Proverbs 11:14
This does not mean you follow the leading of advisors – but that you should listen.
Quite often I get conflicting counsel – my job is to listen to all sides and make the decision that I think is God honoring and effective.
The third question – is PG&E
What have you learned from the pain, gains and wisdom, and experience of past decisions.
Leaders ought to be adding to the vault of their own wisdom as they chronicle their decisions over time. This is why I am a fan of journaling – especially when it concerns decision making.
Just the discipline of writing it down – beatings from international trips – had a lot of power and discipline.
Fourth – Is the Holy Spirit prompting me?
Romans 8:6 – when you’re in step with the spirit it leads to life and peace.
Along with that will be a serenity in your inner world.
sooner or later you have to decide some things
You have to take responsibility for having made the decision.
If you are intense about taking responsibility then it will help in moving forward and learning.
This has all been the basics.
Some people compress all these things into axioms, proverbs, or microwave decisions – if it works they will take it and it will become a staple around the office and in the future.
Abraham Lincoln – the best way to beat my enemy is to make them my friend.
In decision times when I was wronged – I wouldn’t go through this process anymore – I would just quote abraham lincoln and build bridges and move on.
Bob Galvin – Create motion for motions sake. Get moving and get others moving. Action is better than inaction
Bill’s Dad – Create action
Often when peole move – they move on to a better idea – innovate, a better solutionn
The Powell Principles -review some of last year
1. Check your ego at the door.
2. Promote a clash of ideas.
3. Reward your best performers and get rid of non-performers.
You cannot tolerate non-performers for very long before it dilutes the organization.
Bill has a book of axioms (76) – coming out soon.
Do we reflect enough on your own leadership so that you have your own leasership axioms and proverbs It will add to the efectiveness and clarity of your decisions.
You can use others but they won’t be as effective as your own.
They had lives beyond the church??? really?
Here they are . . . some of Bill’s axioms.
1. Vision leaks – people loose it over time because of the intensity of their every day life.
2. All I have to do is get the right people around the table and we’ll be fine.
They feed off your faith based gut belief that God can do ti
3. Facts are your friends. – talks about Reveal . . .
4. When something feels funky – engage
When a problem is brewing, do not believe that problems go away if left unattended.
5. Leaders call fouls.
Acknowledge when people cross the line – offer mulligans
6. Sometimes a leader has to call a foul on themselves.
7. Take a flier – take a calculated risk once in a while.
Every once in a while you need to pony up and have an action plan that will take your breath away.
8. This is church.
Makes me think of last christmas and child haven.
1 Timothy 6 – life that is truly life.
You will never life life in all it’s fullness until you are fully and uncompromisingly yielded to Christ and getting about God’s purposes in this world.
