Music and Editing

There are a lot of people who have made the most of their film careers by picking the right music, and getting that perfect score.  I can say as an editor – I find that when I put the right music to something, it just becomes ten times more powerful.

At a conference I went to last summer in Washington D.C. a church showed a highlight video of all the people they baptized the past year with the song Fix You by Coldplay playing underneath it.  Afterwards everyone was raving about how great it was.  Coincidentally I had used it during a video I made a few months earlier.  After that service people were saying how great the video was.  Which, by the way – although it was okay it wasn’t stellar.

The point is – Fix You is a great song and if you put it behind me checking my mail I would cry.  Wait, that wasn’t the point.  The point is music makes a difference when you edit and you have to make sure you’re picking the right thing.

That being said, the more you edit something and listen to a song over and over – the more you hate it.  Right now I am editing a dance recital I shot with my good friend Will.  Their song choices were – well anyway I am now sick of every song in the recital and at the same time I can’t get them out of my head.  Awful place to be stuck in.
